Abstract

Concrete is most widely used building materials in construction industry. Crack formation is a natural phenomenon when concrete is exposed to extreme weather and normally related to the durability of the concrete. Cracks commonly occur in concrete structure when it is not properly cured, over-loading action, high temperature and chemical reaction. Self-healing of cracks in concrete would contribute to a longer service life of concrete structures, improve durability of the materials and also more sustainable. Therefore, applying effective microorganism (EM) as self-healing agent is a potential solution in order to repair micro cracks. In this study, two experimental works were conducted to determine the effect of EM as a self-healing agent in concrete on its fresh and engineering properties through the trial mixture and the optimum EM mixture. For the trial mix, 9 cubes in the increment of 5%, 10% and 15% were prepared. Slump and compressive tests were carried out. The finding shows that the slump for 10% of EM sample was increased by 11.3% compared with the control sample. EM with 10% added to the mixture also gives the higher value of 32 N/mm2 strength of the design compressive strength respectively. For the second experimental works, 96 cubes with 48 cubes of both control and optimum EM samples were prepared. The experimental results show that the compressive strength of EM sample was found to be higher compared to the control sample either with pre-cracks or without pre-cracks .The cracks healing process is determined by the increase of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity values in cracked concrete. The value of UPV increased by 9.5% for control pre-crack water curing, 12% for EM pre-crack water curing, 7.6% for control pre-crack air curing and 6.9% for EM pre-crack air curing. The results of the study show that the optimum EM can improve the fresh and engineering properties of the concrete.
