Abstract
IPv6 has been launch and implemented since 2012 to substitute IPv4 which already reach the limit due to the exponential increase of internet users. However, there are many challenges to implement IPv6 especially compatibility and cost of hardware. Hence, there are three types of transition mechanisms proposed for the migration process to boost the implementation of IPv6. All transition mechanisms ensure that the IPv6 network can coexist with the existing IPv4 network whether through the address translating mechanism method, dual-stack mechanism method or tunneling mechanism method. 6to4 tunneling mechanism is one of many tunneling mechanisms available besides ISATAP, 6rd, Teredo, 6over4 and others. 6to4 tunneling provides a way to carry IPv6 traffic in the existing IPv4 routing infrastructure, connecting IPv6 island to another IPv6 island with low implementation costs. However, there are security issues related to tunneling that attackers can exploit to hide the intrusion through a double encapsulation packet header. Since the 6to4 tunneling mechanism uses protocol 41 as a payload of a double layer packet header for IPv6 packet, encapsulated with IPv4 datagram, intrusion can bypass the NIDS by hiding in the second layer of encapsulated datagram header due to NIDS only capable of decapsulating the packet once. Lack of detection mechanism in network traffic will increase the risk of hardware failure or data loss. Thus, this study provides an approach to detect anomaly traffic that manipulates double encapsulated packets in the tunneling mechanism of IPv6 to IPv4.
