Abstract
Non-verbal communication is defined as conveying a message through facial expression, gestures, paralinguistic, body language and posture, proxemics, eye gaze, haptic, appearance and artifacts. Dress code is a form of nonverbal communication that has social consequences for the audience. Clothing discloses nonverbal information about a speaker's personality, history, and financial situation. Others judge women based on what they wear to work. According to Gurung (2017), provocatively dressed women are perceived as less competent than conservative dress women. The objective of this research is to identify the key components of clothing portraying non-verbal communication in professional attire and help empower women in creating the image and appearances of a professional woman. An interview is conducted with industry practitioners mainly on image and appearance consultants and stylists to understand the issue of image and appearances among professional women. Besides that, sets of questionnaires are prepared to investigate the issue and current trends on silhouette and style of professional attire. The findings of the interviews and questionnaires are examined and incorporated into qualitative data and statistics. According to the results from the interview, it shows that clothing or attire is one of the non-verbal communications in portraying professional image and appearances. Moreover, women had difficulty choosing the appropriate style and colour to achieve the professional look as it looked ambiguous. Based on the questionnaire analysis, most respondents preferred tailored fit attire with innovation (adjustable sizes or pockets). The result shows that aspects such as ambiguous design lines should be considered to incorporate function and keep the aesthetic value to meet the requirement and expectation of portraying professional image and appearances for working women.
