Abstract

Nowadays, flying has become more accessible due to the penetration of the low-cost airline carrier into the aviation industry. In relation to the increasing demand of a flight trip, most airliners prefer to cut down the cost by taking advantage of reducing a personal space of the passenger. This includes aircraft passenger seat and the most affected is economy class cabin passenger. Speaking of which, one of the most important issue that has been constantly reported over years is the fighting over the armrest due to limited personal space and privacy issue. In some severe cases, the air rage has made the aircraft to be diverted due to the safety issue of the flight attendant and aircraft passengers. In relation to this issue, a conceptual design of the extendable aircraft passenger armrest has been developed to address this matter comprehensively. A design requirement has been conducted which includes a survey, Pareto Diagram and Quality Function Deployment. In order to formulate the design concept, a morphological matrix has been deployed to explore the possible solutions for the design concept. Furthermore, TOPSIS evaluation has been conducted to aid in selecting the optimum alternative solution of the design concept. As a result, design concept 3 has been carefully chosen which incorporate improved features such as privacy, comfort and flexibility. These improved features have been aligned with the design requirement and standard dimension outlined by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA UK) in Airworthiness Notice AN64. Furthermore, the conceptual design of the extendable armrest incorporates anthropometric parameters and ergonomic design concept to ensure the dimension applied in every part of the armrest is relevant and suitable to standard size of the occupant. Conclusively, hopefully this conceptual design will improve a seating experience of the aircraft passenger and gives a new perception towards economy class cabin.
