Abstract

The aircraft seat tray table is designed for placing food and beverages in its service position. Additionally, it can also be utilized as a writing pad, handrest, place to hold laptops, gadgets and electronic devices, and a few other applications, which enables passengers to carry on their activities during flight uninterrupted. Most of the current tray table designs offer limited usable space and have a locking mechanism at its center when passengers need to stow them away. From the established issues related with the current tray table designs, there is a need for new and improved one that can better promote mobility and functionality. In this study, a conceptual design of improved tray table is developed through systematic engineering design process that includes requirements analysis using Quality Function Deployment method, generation of the alternative design concepts using Morphological Matrix method and selection of the best design concept using Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. The best conceptual design is then detailed out for the final proposal of the new improved passengers’ seat tray table.
