Abstract

Recently, researches on other alternative external strengthening material such as natural fibre reinforced composite have become a trending interest. Hence, this work presents an experimental investigation on the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using bamboo fibre-reinforced composite (BFRC) plates in the shear zone. In this study, the bamboo fibre of species, Gigantocholoa scortechinii was considered. The bamboo was treated with 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration with a soaking duration of 48 hours before extraction using a rolling mill. BFRC plates were fabricated using the hand lay-up method with two types of thermoset matrix, epoxy and vinyl-ester with fibre volume fractions of 0%, 30%, 35%, 40%, 45% and 50%. Mechanical properties of the composite plates were studied in terms of tensile and flexural tests. Five samples were conducted for each different fibre volume fraction to determine the optimal mix fraction. The optimal fibre volume fraction was also tested for the water absorption test. A total of 10 beams were cast and tested which consist of solid beams (control beam) and remaining beams for strengthening in shear with two strengthening configurations, 90° and 45°. To enhance the strengthening performance in shear, a bolt and nut method was conducted on the most effective strengthening configuration. All the beams were tested to failure under four-point bending. Results were recorded in terms of load-deflection, cracking patterns and failure mode. It was found that the mechanical properties of BFRC plates increase with the increase of fibre volume fraction regardless of the type of matrix. The optimum fibre volume fraction which gave the highest performance in terms of tensile and flexural tests is 45% epoxy-based resin, BFREC. The most effective strengthening configuration was identified as 90° strengthening orientation. Beam strengthened using BFREC at 90° strengthening orientation managed to achieve an ultimate load, 170.60 kN about 27.81% compared to the original beam capacity of the control beam, 133.48 kN. Enhancement of shear strengthening using the ‘bolt and nut’ method was performed on a beam with 90° strengthening orientation and showed a regain in beam capacity of 31.72% compared to the control beam. Strengthening of RC beams using BFREC plates in shear managed to change the mode of failure from brittle to ductile behaviour. Furthermore, BFREC plates managed to mitigate crack propagation and improve beam ductility. From the results obtained, this signifies that BFREC plates having 45% fibre volume fraction strengthened at 90° strengthening orientation give the most effective strengthening in shear. This signifies that BFREC plates could be utilized for shear strengthening of RC beams, which could lead to a more economical strengthening option for the construction industry.
